DICKENS, CHARLES. 1812-1870.
Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi. Edited by "Boz." London: Richard Bentley, 1838.
2 volumes. 8vo (205 x 130 mm). xix, 288; ix; 263, 36 ad pp. Half-titles. Author portrait, frontispiece engraving, and 12 etched plates by George Cruikshank. Original pink embossed cloth. Light foxing to title of volume 2 and facing plate, light soiling to cloth.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. In pink flowered cloth (Carter binding A) with no border around final plate. According to Bentley, Dickens did a good deal more than edit this memoir which had been turned over to him for improvement; exactly which parts he wrote is still a matter of debate, but the entire book is suffused with his style. Carter, Binding Variants pp 106-7; Cohn 238; Eckel pp 152 ff.
