BISHOP, ELIZABETH. 1911-1979.
The Fish. [Seattle: Printed by John Sollid for David Ishii, 1974.]
Broadside poem printed on wove paper, 230 x 335 mm. Few soft handling creases. Signature very faded, corner crease, tanned or on tan paper.
Provenance: Serendipity Books.
SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, ONE OF A TINY LIMITATION, THE FIRST SEPARATE PRINTING OF ONE OF BISHOP'S MOST IMPORTANT POEMS. Candace MacMahon describes the history of this broadside in her 1980 bibliography (the galleys of which were proofed by Bishop before her death): "13 copies of this broadside were printed for Mr. David Ishii, bookseller and fisherman, by a private printer, John and Karen Sollid, Seattle, Washington, approximately one month before EB's arrival for the Roethke Memorial Reading in May 1974. During her stay, EB signed 12 copies. Seven copies were distributed; five remain in the possession of Mr. Ishii. One unsigned copy belongs to the printer. None are for sale" (Appendix II, p 210 ff).
This copy is un-numbered and of a smaller size than the other described examples. The limitation statement would have appeared in the lower left corner, it was possibly trimmed.
