ROWLANDSON, THOMAS. 1756-1827.
Rowlandson's World in Miniature: Consisting of Groups of Figures for the Illustration of Landscape Scenery. London: R. Ackermann, 1816.
8 parts. 8vo (250 x 174 mm). 40 plates both drawn and etched by Rowlandson. Advertisements for Ackermann on inside front and back wrappers. Original printed blue wrappers. Custom clamshell box. Wrappers browned at edges and with old repair to backstrips, several plate numbers trimmed.
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS. Each part consists of five etchings, with no letterpress text, the imprint details come from the wrappers. The book-form edition has a title page with 1817 date. This is likely the scarcest of Rowlandson's works in original parts. Plate 39 is incorrectly numbered as 40, corresponding to the first copy in the Grolier Club exhibition of 1918. The plates illustrate taverns, racing, fishing, country life, boating, etc. and contain up to three scenes each. Only three of the plates are titled within the etching. No copy of the parts issue is recorded in ABPC since 1977. Grolier Rowlandson 35; Tooley 437 (book form).
