4to (244 x 184 mm). xii, 255. Engraved double page folding view of Lake Ontario (skillfully backed with linen). Full crushed levant morocco by Riviere, raised bands, gilt titles and floral devices in spine panels, elaborate gilt interlaced design with floral wreath centerpiece to covers, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, morocco pull-off case. Leaves toned, a few tiny tears to edges.
Provenance: Samuel Jones Esq. (armorial bookplate by Henry Dawkins, ownership signature, dedication inscription).

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST HISTORY OF NEW YORK, A PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED on the title page, "Ex Libris Samuel Jones a Gulielmo Smith donatis. 1758." Jones went on to be elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and served as a state senator as well as the Comptroller for New York. Church 1023; Howes S703; Pilling 3669; Sabin 84566.
