FIRST EDITION. Perhaps the most ambitious of this celebrated émigré artist's picture books. Born in Kiev, Natalya Chelpanova studied at VKhUTEMAS and married the cultural attaché of the French Embassy Brice Parain in 1926. After emigrating to France, she illustrated a dozen of the "Père Castor" picture books for Flammarion in the Russian Constructivist manner. In 1944, she received le Prix de l'Académie des Beaux Arts. N. A. Teffi based her text on the famous skazka collected by Afanassiev.
