FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. Dar was the last novel Nabokov wrote in Russian and did not appear in English until 1963. This complex and somewhat autobiographical work was written in Berlin between 1935 and 1937. The emigre journal Sovremennye zapiski serialized it under his pseudonym "Sirin," but suppressed the fourth chapter for purportedly being inspired by the father of Socialist Realism, Nikolai Chernyshevski. This 1952 Russian edition issued by a branch of the Ford Foundation's Eastern European Fund is the first full appearance of the novel.
