KOROLENKO, VLADIMIR G. 1853-1921.
Ocherki i razkazy. [Sketches and Tales.] Moscow: I.N. Kushnerev i Ko., 1887 and 1893.
2 volumes. Small 4to. Period quarter and half buckram over marbled boards. Hinges cracked, light spotting at ends.
PRESENTATION COPIES. A Ukrainian journalist and political activist, Korolenko is probably best remembered for his short stories. Both collections reproduce contributions that originally appeared in journal Russkaya Mysl [The Russian Thinker]. He was an early supporter of Chekhov as a playwright and the two resigned from the Russian Academy of Sciences in protest when Maxim Gorky was expelled for political activity. Korolenko was vehemently anti-Tsarist and quickly lost his faith in the Bolshevik state.
