NAPPELBAUM, MOSEI SOLOMONOVICH. Photograph Signed ("E. Gerdt") of the famous ballerina, toned platinum print, 4½ x 6 inches, signed in pencil by the photographer on the mount, mount with short tear at upper margin.
E.P. Gerdt was a famous Russian ballerina and teacher. She studied under Fokine and partnered with Nijinsky at the ballet academy. She was only one of two Russian prima ballerinas who remained after the Bolshevik Revolution. She suddenly stopped dancing in 1928 to devote the rest of her life to teaching dancers with the Bolshoi Ballet. The famous Jewish photographer Nappelbaum took iconic portraits of important Russian artistic (Akhmatova, Blok, Essenin, Gorky, Gumilev, Mandelshtam, Tatlin) and political (Lenin, Stalin, Sverdlov) figures.
