FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY of Chekhov's second collection of short stories, signed and affectionately inscribed to the Russian actor Pavel Svabodin on the half-title: "To Pavel Matveevich Svabodin [Paul Matias] from the author A. Chekhov. 88.8/IV." Svabodin belonged to the Moscow Art Theater where Chekhov's plays were first performed and often visited Checkhov's Melikovo estate. He died from tuberculosis at only 42.
