FIRST BILIBIN EDITION. Commissioned by the Tsarist government in 1899, this series of skazki [fairy tales] established Bilibin internationally as the foremost interpreter of Russian folk tales. He scoured the countryside for ancient architecture, costumes, fabrics and implements to make his illustrations as authentic as possible.
