Benois' favorite opera was Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades, based on the present work. Although Benois provided some of the décor for a 1903 production, it was not until May 1921 that he produced the ballet for the State Theater for Opera and Ballet in Petrograd, also designing all the sets and costumes. These illustrations, dating from a decade before, clearly influenced that 1921 production.
