4to. Tipped-in color plates after Benois. Original cream boards, elaborately gilt. A little finger-soiling, a few annotations to rear free endpaper, binding rubbed with loss at head and tail of spine.

TOGETHER WITH A SALESMAN'S DUMMY for this edition, being a cloth-bound volume containing a green morocco upper cover and spine blindstamped in the same manner as the cream boards, and the first 28 pages of the volume.
Benois' favorite opera was Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades, based on the present work. Although Benois provided some of the décor for a 1903 production, it was not until May 1921 that he produced the ballet for the State Theater for Opera and Ballet in Petrograd, also designing all the sets and costumes. These illustrations, dating from a decade before, clearly influenced that 1921 production.
