A carved rhinoceros horn libation cup
17th/18th century
Of irregular tapered ovoid section centered by a deep well, the exterior sides carved in high relief with a continuous tableau of scholars in a seaside retreat shaded by pine and other trees, some deeply undercut to form a handle at one end with a subsidiary bough entering the interior rim of the cup, the matrix of warm golden brown hue on the exterior with areas of deeper brown across the floor of the well and the base; together with a custom made reticulated wood stand.
