A mottled nephrite figure of a mythical beast
17th century
Possibly depicting a qilin, as suggested by the single horn on its head rising in high relief from the delicately line-incised contours of the mane behind its wide head with drill holes to the jaw, its bifurcated tail incised with archaistic C-scrolls that also appear on the furry tufts atop each leg; the pale greenish-white matrix, visible on the head and left flank, displaying some icy white inclusions and natural fissure lines surrounded by variegated russet staining on the remaining surfaces.
4in (10cm) long
Sold for US$ 21,250 inc. premium
