A pair of silver-mounted English flintlock pistols by Joseph Griffin
circa 1760
Each with 8 1/2 inch tapered round barrel in .62 caliber smoothbore. Breeches with Gunmaker's Company view and proof and Joseph Griffin's touch mark, top flats engraved Griffin/London. Engraved tangs. Rounded locks signed Griffin, the lockplates, pan covers and swan-necked cocks engraved with narrow, dentate borders. Finely cast and chased silver mounts; pierced foliate counterplates; grotesque mask buttplates; wrist escutcheons with crossed cannon and sword below and helmet a la antique above, the central panels engraved with monogram TS. Steel triggerguards, the bows engraved with blossoms. Steel ramrod thimbles. Full walnut stocks relief-carved with shells at the barrel tangs.
Condition: Very good. Barrels, locks and triggerguards showing some minor pitting, one pistol with wear and rubbing from cleaning. Stocks with scattered light marks.
