An American percussion bench rifle
western Pennsylvania, 3rd quarter 19th century
Heavy 44 inch browned octagonal barrel (diameter 1 3/4") with seven-groove rifling in .62 caliber; hooded front sight; open rear sight; tang with folding peep sight; top flat signed -ostley, Nelson & Co./Pittsburg. Double-set triggers. Engraved lock with waterproof pan and signed Partridge. Brass furniture including scrolling triggerguard and engraved and pierced patchbox. Full striped maple stock with fluted cheekpiece and six silver inlays: an eight-pointed star on the cheekpiece; a vacant, oval escutcheon on the comb; small, engraved floral panels in front of and behind the lock; pierced and engraved panels on either side of the small counterplate.
Condition: Very good. Barrel retains much browned finish and areas of pitting at the breech. Lock showing wear and light pitting, the cock replaced. Stock with scattered marks and hairline crack at butt.
