An American full-stocked percussion rifle
second quarter 19th century
The 48 inch octagonal .44 caliber barrel with silver fore-sight and open rear sight, both framed by panels of sixteen small stamped crosses. Engraved lock marked Golcher. Double-set triggers. Brass furniture, the patchbox with trefoil finial. Full stock with striped finish and inlaid with vacant silver escutcheon on the cheekpiece and three engraved silver panels on either side of the fore-end.
Condition: Very good. Metal with dark, mottled patina, the breech end of the barrel showing some light filing marks. Set triggers in need of adjustment. Stock showing scattered marks including deep scratch and hairline crack with chipping to left rear of fore-end, hairline crack between lockplate and triggerguard and repaired crack at wrist, filled areas to either side of barrel tang and missing two small inlays in the same area.
