An Ames-assembled militia staff officer's sword
circa 1850-65
Straight 31 inch double edged blade with 12 inch central fuller and 19 1/2 inch panel etched and engraved with floral scrolls and oak branches; one side with Federal eagle, the other with stand of flags. Above the hilt marked with Ames Mfg. Co. markings as well as those of Coulaux of Klingenthal. Brass hilt; guard of mameluke-form molded with scrollwork and beading around a five-pointed star, helmet pommel, the pommel and outer quillon with ring for chain guard, now missing. Bone grip carved with shell, ribbed and herringbone panels. Gilt copper three-ring scabbard engraved with panels of leafage and acanthus.
Condition: Blade with smooth, grey metal showing some minor spotting. Hilt with dark patina. Grip with minor age cracks. Scabbard retains 50-60% gilt finish and showing scattered light dents.
