A militia officer's sword by Ames Mfg. Co.
circa 1848-60
Straight 31 inch double edged blade with 19 inch panel etched and engraved with conventional motifs, the base with Ames Mfg. Co. markings. Gilt brass hilt; spread eagle guard with Federal shield languets; double chain guard; helmet pommel. Mother-of-pearl gripscales. Gilt brass three-ring scabbard engraved with panels of foliage, reverse stamped with Ames markings. Retaining the original gilt brass suspension chains, the links molded with foliage.
Condition: Blade showing scattered light spotting and patches of dark corrosion partially obscuring the decoration. Hilt retains perhaps 80-85% gilt finish. One gripscale with hairline crack showing some chipping, the other with some small areas of chipping. Scabbard retains nearly all vivid gilt finish.
