A militia artillery officer's sword of unusual form
circa 1830-50
Straight 30 inch single edged blade with full-length fuller and 17 inch blued panel engraved with panels of gilt foliage interspersed with etched panels of foliage on a frosted ground; one side with Federal eagle, the other with panoply of arms incorporating a Federal shield. Gilt brass stirrup hilt; shield-shaped languets molded with Imperial-style eagles; scrolling guard, the quillon with leafy finial; knucklebow molded with acanthus and central oval panel framed by S-scrolls; pistolgrip pommel tapering to the knucklebow and molded with leafage and scrolls. Grey shagreen and copper wire-wrapped grip. Gilt brass three-ring scabbard engraved with panels of leafage and a small eagle perched on a Federal shield.
Condition: Blade excellent and showing only slight loss to blued finish on one side above the hilt. Hilt and scabbard retain virtually all gilt finish.
