An American eagle pommel infantry officer's sword by Wm. H. Horstmann & Sons
circa 1843-53
Narrow, straight 28 inch blade with 12 inch panel etched with conventional scrollwork and panoplies and marked WHH&S on one side and Philadelphia on the reverse. Brass hilt comprising asymmetrical shell molded with foliage and Federal eagle; scrolling knucklebow molded with foliage and linked wreaths; eaglehead pommel. Reeded bone grip. Silvered brass scabbard engraved with leafage and fitted with suspension rings and frog stud.
Condition: Blade showing minor spotting. Hilt retains generous traces of silver plating on underside of shell. Grip with some age cracks. Scabbard retains perhaps 50% silver plating with some minor denting above drag.
