An American eagle pommel infantry officer's saber
circa 1805-10
Curved 27 inch blade with broad, shallow fuller and 14 inch blued and gilt panel blued and gilt panel with leaf-form stop and engraved with conventional foliage and panoplies of arms. Brass five-ball hilt retaining generous traces of silver plating. Ketland-style eaglehead pommel. Reeded bone grip. Black leather scabbard. Brass mounts with suspension rings, frog stud and four line engraving.
Condition: Blade showing scattered light spotting and retaining much of the partly faded blued and gilt decoration. Grip with one full-length crack and some minor pitting. Scabbard leather with surface crazing but very sound. Mounts with dark patina and smooth metal, the throat retaining some silver plating.
