An American eagle pommel infantry officer's sword
circa 1821-40
Narrow, straight 31 1/2 inch blade with 11 1/2 inch blued and gilt panel above the hilt engraved with conventional florals and a panoply of arms. Silver-plated brass stirrup hilt: languets molded with Federal eagles; quillon with disc finial; knucklebow with central, beaded swell; ferrule molded with acanthus; backstrap with integral eaglehead pommel. Ribbed bone grip. Silver-plated brass scabbard engraved with foliage and borders and fitted with sling rings and frog stud.
Condition: Blade excellent and retaining most of the bright blued and gilt decoration and original polish with some minor pitting at the point. Hilt with 80-85% silver. Grip with one large chip below pommel. Scabbard with some scattered dents and retaining 50-60% unpolished silver.
