An American officer's Revolutionary War era short saber
circa 1775-78
Broad, slightly curved 28 1/2 inch blade with three deep fullers below the spine and retaining generous amounts of what appears to be a blued finish. Original leather washer. Brass knucklebow flaring irregularly at the blade, the top extending to a circular panel pierced by the tang, the edge with van dyked decoration. Unusual 'pineapple' brass capstan pommel with peened decoration in the form of diagonal bands. Turned walnut grip. With rare original black leather scabbard, the throat with frog stud and scalloped lower rim. Drag with scalloped upper rim.
