18th century
Narrow 29 inch blade, the upper 24 inches with flattened median ridge, the forte of oval section engraved with florals and inscribed with the motto Je/Esperara/Me/Contente/Si/Fortune/Tourmen/te. (I hope to be happy if fortune torments me) Iron hilt comprising simple bilobate guard; faceted and turned quillon block, the quillon with faceted terminal inclined to one side; knucklebow with central faceted ball; faceted ferrules; fluted pommel. Grip wrapped in copper and iron wire.
Condition: Having a dark patina with areas of light pitting. Blade with reshaped point and with frittering/minor dents to edge. Bilobate guard probably replaced.
