A Victorian regimental officer's basket-hilted broadsword
circa 1865, probably for the Black Watch
Straight 32 1/2 inch double edged blade of oval section with 11 inch central fuller and 22 inch panel etched and engraved with a dense design of floral scrollwork, one side with Royal crown and cipher, the other with a panoply of arms above the Scottish saltire and motto and marked above the ricasso E. Sabell/Birmingham. Steel basket hilt composed of rounded bars and a solid knucklebow panel flanked by four panels pierced and chased with thistle plants. Conical capstan pommel with four flutes. Grip wrapped in grey shagreen and copper wire. Retaining the original liner covered in red wool piped in dark blue and the dark grey silk tassel.
Condition: Blade showing sharp decoration and some scattered small patches of dark spotting. Hilt with some scattered spotting.
