A Scottish basket-hilted broadsword
hilt probably Glasgow, first half 18th century, the blade 17th century
Straight 35 1/2 inch double edged blade marked on both sides with the running wolf above an 8 inch fuller inscribed SAHOGOM and on one side with the Amsterdam mark above the hilt. Steel hilt composed of bars of rectangular section and panels with heart-shaped of round piercings, the narrow panels with fluted decoration, the outermost with finials in the form of fleur-de-lys, one marked E No. 19. Fluted conical pommel. Dark wooden grip retaining part of a twisted copper wire wrapping.
Condition: Blade with dark, mottled patina showing some light pitting. Hilt with dark metal showing some deeper pitting.
