The sterling silver mountings on cap and cone are shaped to resemble a spindle, Gandhi's favored symbol of common cause with the people. The clip is set with a bright mandarin garnet, whose cut is reminiscent of a spinning wheel, an object of great symbolic value to Gandhi.
