1867 Pattern 5C, Judd-573a, Pollock-647, R.8, Proof 63 Brown PCGS
An extremely rare pattern issue combining a regular dies Shield nickel design obverse with a reverse featuring the denomination CENTS in a straight line inside of a laurel wreath and a tiny Motto above. Struck in copper with a plain edge. This is an exceptionally rare pattern listed by both Bowers and Pollock as an R.8 with only two examples known, however, our research indicates the possibility of 3-4 specimens. This example displays deep copper-brown surfaces with hints of gold and blue. Minor hairlines are visible with a strong loupe, however, these are consistent with the assigned grade by PCGS.
