MCMVII (1907) High Relief $20 Wire Rim
A simply splendid near-Mint State survivor of this most storied coin in American numismatics. Rich yellow-gold and boasting what is essentially unbroken mint luster, the fields display just a touch of friction while the only real noticeable rubbing is at Liberty's breast and knee, which is the very highest point of the design is sometimes soft even on Choice Mint State coins. One lateral contact mark is mentioned in the left obverse field. As many High Reliefs ended up in non-numismatic hands at time of issue, lightly circulated specimens like this probably attest the fact that their owners handled them and showed them off from time to time--in fact, in the years soon after their issue, it might have cost as much as $30 to acquire a specimen, a symptom of how desirable it was to own one. The demand has not faded today, with eye appealing specimens like this selling into the five figures at auction. (PCGS 9135) About Uncirculated to Uncirculated
