A condition rarity and of considerable importance as the Type Two double eagles have not been found in large numbers in Choice or finer grades through shipwrecks or broken bank hoards, and at this time are likely to remain quite scarce at this grade level. The surfaces are bathed in classic reddish-gold luster, with the expected strong strike. What sets this piece apart is the overall quality and eye appeal of the surfaces. Most Type Two double eagles are baggy as the result of many generations of storage in canvas bags or something similar in European banks. The present coin likely came from this source, but survived in much nicer condition that usually seen. There are scattered scuffs, but they are not deep and the luster is generally intact. A centennial year issue, and highly appealing. Population: 118 in 63, just 12 finer (MS65 finest). (PCGS 8978)
