1802/1 $5
BD-8, R.4, High Overdate. Satiny and lustrous light yellow-gold with light olive overtones in the fields. Rather well struck with some typical softness on the higher points of Liberty's hair. However, the remaining details on each side of the coin are nicely defined. A thin reverse scratch is noted across the shield, but not terribly obvious. Nice eye appeal otherwise. A bold overdate makes this issue popular with collectors. This example is die state c/b as described by John Dannreuther, with a thin die crack through UNIT of UNITED, this apparently slightly more advanced than the Bass-Dannreuther description. In the latest state, this reverse die forms a small CUD break over the T of UNITED, but there is no evidence of this beginning on this coin. (PCGS 8083) Brilliant Uncirculated to Choice Uncirculated
