1871 $3 Proof 63 Cameo NGC
Mint records indicate 30 proof $3 coins were minted in 1871, however, very few have survived the ravages of time. Bowers estimates 15 to 20 known examples, however, our research indicates only 12-15 pieces now exist. In fact, the last time an example was offered at public auction was in 2007. Only 18 submissions to the two (combined) major services have been certified, several likely resubmissions. This lovely Cameo Proof has excellent contrast with rich greenish-gold surfaces and deeply mirrored fields. A couple of post-striking contact marks are noted on the obverse, as is a mint-made lintmark in the field to the left of Liberty's nose. These are mentioned only to aid in future identification. A rare, fleeting opportunity for the proof gold specialist. (PCGS 88034)
