Softly frosted mint luster mingles with handsome green-gold patina on both sides of this attractively original piece. The surfaces are uncommonly well preserved for an example of this type, there being absolutely no wear and virtually no abrasions, small or large.
Three dollar gold production in the Philadelphia Mint dropped off markedly in this, only the second year of the series. Yet, at 50,555 business strikes delivered, the 1855 is still among the higher-mintage issues of the type. Mint State coins are scarce in an absolute sense, however, and few grade finer than BU.
