Lot Details
1884-S $1
In spite of its mintage, this issue has long been celebrated for its scarcity of coins in Mint State. With 3.2 million pieces struck, it would be thought that a bag or two might have been reported, but that is not the case. The total quantity of Uncirculated specimens graded by PCGS and NGC is several hundred coins at all levels, not several thousand but several hundred. Morgan dollar collectors have an enormous influence on the pricing scale with this year, but with tens of thousands of eager buyers in the hunt for Mint State examples for specialized collections, most come up empty-handed.

Well struck and untoned with a snow-white appearance. The '84-S is a very rare date in this high grade. Despite a not insignificant mintage, this date is one of several prized condition rarities in the series of Morgan silver dollars. Since the surfaces here are satiny and largely mark-free, the present specimen can claim well above-average eye appeal. The luster is vibrant and silvery with subtle iridescence, as well. Cartwheel effects are present when the viewer rotates the coin beneath a light. An impressive coin for the grade, is the point we are stressing, and one we feel should please most collectors with its well preserved surfaces and sharp strike.
