1859-S 25C AU50 PCGS
Medium olive-russet color with lighter highpoints and traces of frosty mint bloom in the protected areas. Not heavily marked despite its short stint in circulation. A rare prize in any grade; just 80,000 examples were struck and the vast majority of that mintage was consumed by the rigors of commerce in and around the "city by the bay." Today, the average survivor is apt to be a heavily circulated piece anywhere from AG to Fine, with finer grades few and far between. Indeed, the present piece is among the five finest examples of the date graded thus far by PCGS, with no Mint State examples seen, and a part of the Condition Census. We note here that no other major grading service has certified an Uncirculated specimen of the date. Whether you specialize in Liberty Seated quarters or simply enjoy the pride of ownership inherent with rare U.S. issues, the present coin will be a feather in your numismatic cap. Population: 2 in 50; 3 finer (AU55 finest). (PCGS 5450)
