Lot 1008
1885 1C MS67 Red and Brown NGC Star
Residing at the zenith of the NGC Census for the issue are five MS67 examples, (three Brown, two Red and Brown) of which the coin in the present lot is perhaps the most eye appealing. We say this not because we have actually seen these other four coins, but only because this piece is so beautiful as to make it seem without peer in the Superb Gem designation. As a conditionally rare survivor from an 11 million piece delivery, this example is a truly uncommon piece. The surfaces are smooth in sheen, and possessed of a rich and satiny luster, under which a dulcimer-red tone gently intermingles with pinkish-red hues. The strike was sharp and crisp throughout, with all devices and legends standing at complete attention, and save for those entirely commensurate with the assigned grade, we find nothing to report in terms of singularly noteworthy abrasions.
