1814 Plain 4 1C MS63 Brown NGC
S-295, R.1. Large 4 without crosslet. Pleasing golden-brown to olive-brown with a couple of darker patches intermixed in the surfaces. The strike is average as a few of the uppermost curls are softly defined, but the wreath, stars and lettering are all well formed by the dies. There are no distracting spots or patches of roughness, which keeps the eye appeal high. Satiny brown luster and good eye appeal. One of the more difficult type or variety coins to find with pleasing color and especially so in Mint State as most of these are found on rough copper and almost none survived in Mint State conditions. While the 1814 can be had for a price, note that at NGC, there are but 15 graded in MS63, 12 are finer, a pretty strong indication of the rarity and desirability of this coin. (PCGS 1576)
