Quilt, Hawaiian Islands
77 by 74ins (195.5 by 188cm)
ca. 1900's, with striking red fan and feather plume of Ka'iulani design in plain woven cotton, hand appliqué and contour quilting.
The fan and feather plume design is a popular design with Hawaiian quilters wishing to reflect their aloha for and adoration of their beloved monarchs. This marvelous quilt commemorates Princess Ka'iulan (1875-1899) who lived in the twilight years of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and was the niece of the last two reigning monarchs of Hawai'i, King Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani.
