Footnotes

  • This stool most likely originates from the Palazzo Reale in Naples where an almost identical pair with the "N" monogram surmounted by a crown appear in Grande Libro del Mobile Antico, Milan, 1998, p. 401. Due to the Napoleonic conquest of Italy in the early 19th century, the French Empire style was disseminated throughout Italy. Napoleon installed his brother Joseph as King of Naples. When Joseph was sent to Spain two years later, he was replaced by Napoleon's sister Caroline and his brother-in-law Marechal Joachim Murat, as King of the Two Sicilies. Caroline became Queen Consort of Naples in 1808. During Caroline's reign, she refurbished the Palazzo Reale and it is possible this stool was commissioned by her.

Previously offered; Christie's New York, April 3, 2002, Lot 420.
