Duane,/Granddaughter of Dr. Franklin./as a testimonial of respect/for her own Virtues and for those of/her Husband,/late Secretary of the United States Treasury/whose regard for the Laws was visited/on him by deprivation of Office/loss of Official favor and/political and partisan persecution

  • This coffee pot was presented to Deborah Franklin Duane, Benjamin Franklin's granddaughter through his daughter Sarah, as a mark of respect both for her own merits and for those of her husband, a former Secretary of State to the US Treasury. William Duane had been forced out of office for refusing to carry out what he regarded as the unlawful instructions of President Andrew Jackson with regard to the nation's deposits.
