8vo (184 x 114 mm). 588, [2] pp. Original full sheep, black leather gilt-lettered spine label. Pp. 391/392 with tape-repaired tear, light dampstain to some leaves, predominately in margins, some light foxing, first two signatures somewhat toned, ownership signatures to front pastedown, general rubbing and wear to binding.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of the first publication of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, with p. iv labeled "vi," with testimony leaf, and without index. Smith's translation of the golden tablets that he claimed to have found on the hill of "Cumorah," now called Mormon Hill near Manchester in the Ontario County, New York formed the foundation of Mormonism. Smith consulted several printers before he found Egbert B. Grandin, publisher of the Wayne Sentinel at Palmyra who agreed to print and bind 5,000 copies for $3,000.
