MICHIGAN IMPRINT.
[LE CLERC, PAUL. 1657-1740.] L'Ame penitente ou nouveau pensez-bien; consideration sur les verites eternelles avec des histoires & des examples.... Detroit: Jacques M. Miller, 1809. 24mo (130 x 74 mm). vi, [7]-220 pp. Half-title. Uncut and unbound. Dust-soiling and some toning.
THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN MICHIGAN, preceded only by broadsides and pamphlets of less than 25 pages. "L'Ame penitente (The Penitent Soul) ... was popular reading in France during the eighteenth century. It is not surprising that Father [Gabriel] Richard selected it as the first piece to be printed by J.M. Miller on the newly acquired Richard Press" (Greenly). This copy is an almost incredible survival, uncut and never sewn. The most recent other copy to appear at auction is the Streeter copy, also unbound. Greenly Selective Bibliography of Michigan 4; McMurtrie 25; Streeter sale 1387.
