Lot Details
EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. 1890-1969.
The White House Years: Waging Peace 1956-1961. Garden City: Doubleday, 1965.
8vo. Original cloth, slipcase. Slipcase rubbed, else fine.

PRESENTATION COPY of the signed limited first edition. One of a small number set aside for Eisenhower without the statement of limitation and the tipped-in signed leaf, and with a bookplate tipped to the half title, displaying the Eisenhowers' Pennsylvania farm, containing the typed presentation "Publication date October 14, 1965 ... For: Neil McElroy" and signed "Devotedly, Dwight Eisenhower." McElroy had been, in Eisenhower's words, the "dynamic president" of Proctor & Gamble, but agreed to serve for two years as Secretary of Defense. His stint came at a time of controversy about the 'missile gap' between the US and the Soviet Union.
