FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front blank, "For Mac / with my best / Thornton Wilder // Davis / November / 1927." A note laid in attests that Mac is Dr Mackenzie, the then-current headmaster of the Lawrenceville School, the New Jersey prep school where Wilder was a French teacher. Davis is one of the houses at Lawrenceville School.
