[WILDE, OSCAR. 1854-1900.]
CALVERLEY, CHARLES STUART. Fly Leaves. Cambridge: Deighton, Bell, and Co., 1873.
8vo. Original cloth. Custom red morocco pull-off case. Slightly shaken, some soiling to endpapers, extremities rubbed.
Provenance: Oscar Wilde (ownership signature on title dated "Michaelmas 1873"); Daniel Henry Holmes [1851-1908], retail heir and poet of Covington, KY, and New Orleans (bookplate on case dated December 1906 in manuscript); Carlos Sanz de Santamaría [1905-1992], Ambassador of Colombia to the US and Representative to the UN (bookplate on front free endpaper).
WILDE'S COPY, inscribed by the teenager in his final year at Trinity College, Dublin. Fly Leaves was suitable reading: Calverley's parodies combined academic scholarship with witty verse, and the final work in this volume ("Examination Paper") is a spoof of The Pickwick Papers.
