GINSBERG, ALLEN. 1926-1997.
Howl, for Carl Solomon. [New York: Gotham Book Mart, c.1979.]
Folio (280 x 215 mm). Collation as preceding lot, except moderate violet ink. Stapled in upper left corner as issued. Gotham Book Mark inkstamp at foot of title.
THE MYSTERIOUS "FACSIMILE" EDITION, printed by Gotham Book Mart without Ginsberg's approval. Around 100 copies were run off from the original ditto masters, intended as a facsimile edition. Ginsberg asked for the entire run to be returned to him, but the publisher said that most copies had already been destroyed and that none were ever sold. This seems unlikely, since a handful are known to exist: some with the GBM rubberstamp, and perhaps 3-5 copies signed by Ginsberg and other Beat Poets and sold by Serendipity Books. The color of the ink, the perfect alignment of the text on the page, and the GBM rubberstamp are indicators of the facsimile issue. The present copy is one of the few copies that were returned to Ginsberg by GBM. Morgan A1.a2.
