WILSON, ALEXANDER. 1766-1813.
[American Ornithology; or the Natural History of the Birds of the United States.... N.p., 1850s.]
Folio (338 x 308mm). With 76 hand-colored engraved illustrations, some heightened with gum arabic. 19th century quarter morocco with gilt-lettered spine in six compartments. Lacking title page, mild foxing throughout, mostly to margins and tissue guards, covers detached, 1/3 of spine missing. Together with four octavo text volumes. Edinburgh: Constable, 1831, bound uniformly.
Attractive set of the plates of Wilson's American Ornithology. Described as "the first American Bird Book with coloured plates, published in America" (Fine Bird Books p 155), this study was more comprehensive than either Catesby or Levaillant's works and predated Audubon by over 20 years.
