FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC WORK ON ACOUSTICS. Chladni, a professor of physics in Breslau, was the first to mathematically analyze sound waves. The 11 plates depict "Chladni figures," the patterns which appear when metal plates covered with sand are made to vibrate. PMM 233b.
