CUBAN IMPRINT.
LABORDE Y NAVARRO, ANGEL. 1772-1834. Nueva division de la Isle de Cuba. Havana: José Boloña, 1829.
8vo (205 x 150 mm). [2], 24 pp. Folding lithographed map of Cuba with letterpress key. Modern quarter morocco. Titled lightly foxed and soiled, plan foxed and with wormhole touching parts of text, final 3 text leaves with wormhole in margin.
FIRST EDITION, signed by Laborde with his monogram at the end, as other copies. José Boloña was almost certainly the first independent printer in Cuba, active from around 1788 onwards. A government press had been in operation on the island since 1747, and there are passing references to presses founded in 1766 and 1773, but these were likely soon closed down by the authorities. A royal decree in 1776 forbade independent printers, a rule that lasted until Boloña.
